Thank you for your ongoing support, you are a key part of the lives of numerous children that are being transformed by God, through House of Wells. May the Lord give you a bountiful harvest of the seed you are sowing and increase the fruits of your righteousness.
HOUSE OF WELLS’ 11th Anniversary
In August, we celebrated 11 years since House of Wells was founded in South Africa to restore hope and dignity, and release the potential of children in severe poverty. In 2008 we started with just seven children that we called off the street and ministered to at a Community Centre in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Today, we have 19 After-School Enrichment Centres – 15 centres in South Africa, two in Zimbabwe, one in Uganda and one in Kenya. In total, 2000 children & youth are benefiting from the work that House of Wells is doing in those four countries. Our heartfelt gratitude to all individuals, Companies and Churches that have supported us since 2008, we greatly appreciate you all.
2019 Children’s Christmas Food Hampers
Dear PARTNERS, WE NEED YOUR HELP… with all the fundraising activities that we’ve embarked on so far we have only managed to raise funds for 400 children’s Food Hampers out of the 2000 Hampers that we need for all House of Wells children in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Uganda& Kenya. This year, our Teenagers will receive their hampers at the Christmas Party on 30th November, and for the younger kids it will be on 7th December 2019. The wholesalers that supply the food items for the hampers require us to place the orders and pay by 1st Nov 2019 because of the large quantity of items that we need.
PLEASE donate £5 or R100 towards each hamper, and kindly consider sponsoring as many children as you possibly can, and also spread the word among your family and friends. Please join us in bringing the Christmas joy to these children, many of whom are in vulnerable situations. Your gift of a food hamper may be the only Christmas gift/food that they receive during the season.

OUR ENRICHMENT CENTRES THIS QUARTER
H.O.W SOUTH AFRICA
In July, the principal of Jarvis Gqamlana, one of the Venues we use for our Enrichment Centres in New Brighton, said he had noticed some great changes in 10 year old Mbalentle , one of the young girls attending our programme in that School. Mbalentle’s class teacher corroborated this when she spoke to our leaders at that Centre: Mbalentle’s behaviour and her attitude to school work has improved so much, and she and all the teachers in the School are convinced that it is because she started coming to H.O.W classes. She used to be quite disruptive and unruly in our classes, always irritable, moody and never participating during worship time or lessons. Mbalentle smiles a lot now, there’s such an aura of peace around her and she interacts with the rest of H.O.W kids in Class – “whom the Son has set free is free indeed” Halleluyah!
One of our Lessons in August was on Psalm 18:2 , we taught the children that God is ever mindful of them and has promised to always protect and shield them from danger. One of the children stood in front of the class and said that the lesson had really blessed her, and she had learnt, that because Jesus is her strength and shield, whenever she is alone or feels afraid she will call upon the Lord and He will help her. She said she is sometimes at home by herself when her mother goes to work and always very scared. After a lesson on Matt 5:16, Mickayla, age 12 said, – “I am a city built on a mountain, my light must shine, others must see Jesus in me”. She said that from now on she will act and speak in ways that show that she belongs to Jesus. At the end of the lesson, we encouraged all the children to pray and ask God to help them to live according to the word of God, so that the love of Jesus will shine through them.
Phumla (21) started attending H.O.W in 2009 during her primary School years, and later became part of the H.O.W Youth Group throughout High School. Ayanda (19) joined H.O.W Youth Group five years ago. They have now finished High School and decided to serve at H.O.W during their Gap Year. They are two amazing and hard working young ladies with a heart for children. Since they started serving at H.O.W, they have never missed an opportunity to tell the children about their experience at H.O.W, how they have grown up with House of Wells, how their confidence has developed and most importantly their knowledge of who they are in Christ. This has been such a blessing for the children to hear from, and be mentored by, someone who has been where they are now. Phumla and Ayanda are passionate about the word of God and teach the lessons to the children clearly and methodically.
Our children are always excited about the word of God and they love hearing it. They enjoy the practical demonstrations of every topic we teach and the fact that they get to participate in the different dramas we do to make the lessons interactive and fun. They love the little games we include in the story of each lesson and the scriptural declarations at the end of the lessons. All the children (of various age groups) are able to participate and enjoy the lessons, they assimilate the lessons easily as they themselves act it. Hearing them summarise the classes during end-of-week revision confirms that they imbibe it and keep it in their hearts.
On 6th September, we had a visit from Mr Sylvester Funani, a representative from NEDBANK. He visited our Enrichment Centre in Kleinskool and encouraged the kids with his message, ministering the love of God to them. A few of the children told him what H.O.W means to them and how House of Wells has been of tremendous support to them and their families over the years. NEDBANK also made a donation towards the Christmas Food Hampers for the children.
Some notable reports about a few of our children at Imbasa Centre:- Avuyile and Zukhanye (grade 6) – showing increasing interest in learning the scriptures. They volunteer to read either Xhosa or English, but mainly in English even though it is not their first language. Reading the scriptures in English repeatedly has also been helpful to them academically.
Odumo (Grade 5) – was formerly very shy, but now volunteers to stand in front of the Class to explain or summarise a Lesson, and does this very well despite his age. He shows leadership potential and we encourage him by engaging him in these activities.
Indiphile – she regularly volunteers to lead prayers, which has rubbed off on the rest of the class as more of the children are now raising their hands to do the same. She asked us to pray for her Mom who was sick, and a few days later she told our Centre Leader: “Miss, what you said about prayer is true, after our prayer my Mom was healed in Jesus name”.
Many of our children have come back with PRAISE REPORTS as a result of praying for them concerning issues in their family, such as parents fighting, physical abuse, unsupportive parents etc. It was very emotional to hear the children thanking God for improving the circumstances in their homes, as some of them have had very horrible experience of abuse. We have encouraged the older children to start journaling their appreciation to God. They were given notebooks for these “Appreciation Messages” where they can write about how they feel and how God has helped them through it.
H.O.W Zimbabwe – Our Zimbabwe Enrichment Centres operate from two areas in the Mbizo suburbs, with a total number of 130 children regularly attending our weekend classes. We have resumed the weekly Tuition/ Revision Classes to assist our children with their School work.
Lesson topics this quarter included – Keeping Our Eyes on Jesus(Isaiah 26:3) and The Importance of Forgiveness (Luke 17:4,Col 3:13) – Jesus teaches us to forgive, unforgiveness does more harm to the person who doesn’t forgive than the person who hurt them. Forgiving others helps us to have the right relationship with other people and with God.
This quarter we also visited various Primary and Secondary Schools in the neighbouring areas of Kwekwe and conducted assemblies.
H.O.W Uganda – We thank God for all He has done in us and through us in Uganda, especially for the lives of all the children that have been touched and transformed by Him through House of Wells in Lusaze. This quarter has been characterised by such an amazing display of the work of the Holy Spirit among our younger children during worship, and HIS incredible manifestations among our young adults. There have been several instances of astounding revelations through dreams and words of knowledge. In addition, we have also noticed spiritual growth in many of our young adults in the way they summarise the lessons, their understanding of scriptures and how they understand the things of the spirit. The Holy Spirit is at work in Lusaze, Kampala, Uganda. We bless God!
H.O.W Kenya – Our Kenya Team continues to see an increase in the number of children that are coming to our Centre every week, where we hold sessions every Thursday and two on Saturdays. Parents regularly inform us of the impact that our English tutorials are having on their children’s academics. More children are making use of the House of Wells Library, as additional books are being donated to House of Wells. One parent recently came to the office to thank House of Wells for the improvement in her son’s performance at School.
One day during lunchtime, a child (Joyce) complained of pain in her throat and said that she was struggling to swallow her food, having had flu symptoms for a number of days. She was taken to the office and given food that she could swallow, and we then sent her older sibling home to inform her mother. When her mother arrived, she told us that Joyce had been ill for some days but could not buy her any medicine because she did not have the money to do so. Our Centre Leader gave Joyce’s mother 200 shillings for the medication. We checked on Joyce a couple of days later and her mother informed us that Joyce was feeling much better. Joyce’s mother was very grateful to God and started attending Church the following Sunday. It is amazing to see how a simple act of kindness can help draw someone to the house of God. Glory to God for the opportunity to love on HIS children and minister to them.
11 years in the life of a child is crucial, we thank GOD for our teenagers and count it a privilege to be used by God to nurture them. Some of them have been with us since 2008 when they were young children, and now they are young men& women who still love to learn about the word of GOD. On Saturday 10th August 2019, the H.O.W Youth celebrated House of Wells 11th anniversary with cakes, sweets, chocolates, other treats and we asked them to share their experiences since they started attending House of Wells. Below are some of their responses:-
(1) Shirece Ceasar 14, has been part of H.O.W for 8yrs – “I have enjoyed being part of House of Wells. Some of my friends who invited me have stopped coming, but I just can’t stay away. I have learned so much from my leaders. I believe Pst Richard and Pst Kemi love me because they pray for me daily. They sacrificed everything to do God’s work. I remember the first day I joined HOW the scripture was Matthew 7v 7. I remember it to this day as it has always helped me to call on the Lord. I love H.O.W”
(2) Moesha Jacobus 17, joined HOW 7yrs ago – ”House of Wells means everything to me. I used to be very shy, always on my own, and never went to church, until I became part of HOW. Now I am an active member of my church, and I am a youth leader. I can speak in front of people now and talk about the Bible. I am growing spiritually through the lessons we receive at HOW. I’m glad to be here today to give honour to God for H.O.W. One of the things I have learnt is that I should guard my heart above all things – Proverbs 4 v 23.
(3) Obediah Lutz…14, joined 5 yrs ago – “When I joined HOW I wasn’t very serious, and just used to come along with my friends. I remember when we were taught John 3 v 16 (For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son), and it later became my favourite verse, since then I started taking what I learn at H.O.W seriously. My love for God and for His presence grew. I learnt the importance of praying and fasting. I used to be very shy but I became bold and confident through Christ. I love to spend quiet time with the Lord. Thank you House of Wells for teaching me about Jesus”.
(4) Afton Hiles…15, joined HOW Teens 3yrs ago – “H.O.W means a lot to me. My confidence was improved at H.O.W. I remember when pastor Richard came to minister to us at the Centre, he prayed a lot and that day I desire to pray just like that. Now I love praying and love to read the bible. At HOW I learnt that nothing is impossible with God. My favourite verse is Matthew 6v 33 (Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you”.
(5) Christelle Japhta….16, started at HOW 4yrs ago – “My parents passed away when I was very young. I used to get sad when my friends would speak about their parents. When I joined HOW I felt so loved here and it changed my life. I’m no longer bitter and angry all the time. I learned to love as God loves me. Thanks to all my HOW Leaders, and Pst Rich and Pst Kemi”.
(6) Contessa Esterhuizen….12, has been attending HOW for 6yrs – “There are so many things I can say about House of Wells, but one that touched my heart the most is the food parcel they gave me the first time I attended the Christmas Party. My family had no food for the Christmas holidays, when I got home with all the food from the Party my family was so happy. It kept us throughout the holidays. My family and I are very grateful for House of Wells”.
(7) Annaline Maarman……17, been at HOW for 7yrs – “One of the many things I have learnt at H.O.W is to always call upon the name of the Lord. I’m grateful for Pastor Kemi and Pastor Richard, and all our centre leaders for teaching me God’s word and the right way to live. Thank you Lord for saving me”.
We were indeed very encouraged to hear these testimonies. It is always wonderful to hear from our teenagers about the impact the House of Wells programme is having on them.
** A 12 year old boy, Ncubeko asked us to pray for his Grandfather who was robbed, shot and left for dead. We prayed for him every day before closing at the Centre. To the glory of God, Ncubeko’s Grandfather is now completely healed. Ncubeko said ” I love Jesus so much for healing my grandfather!!
* When we visited Briyana’s family during last quarter’s Home Visits, her Mum asked us to pray for them about getting their own home, as they were living with someone at the time. A few weeks ago, Briyana’s Mum sent a message that God answered the prayer we prayed for them. Praise Jesus!
This Quarter’s HOME VISITS
It is humbling to minister to families during our Home Visits, and very rewarding to see how the parents/guardians appreciate the visits and the work that House of Wells is doing in their communities. All the Parents/Guardians were happy for their children to continue attending H.O.W as they are seeing a positive impact. They were particularly pleased that we do a regular follow-ups on their children’s welfare by visiting them at home. Highlights below:-
Amy, 9yrs old – a family of five, where unfortunately no one works. Her Mum says Amy talks a lot about H.O.W and mentioned that we had once prayed for her while she was ill and staying with a friend. She said she was very touched by the love shown towards her and our prayers. She said God answered the prayer and that she was totally healed, hence she told her daughter to join H.O.W. We trust God that HE will answer the prayers for employment as well, and this family will testify once again.
Tara, 15 yrs old – We visited Tara’s house as we noticed that she hasn’t been to H.O.W Teens classes for a while. We told her how much we still love and miss her and most importantly, that God loves her very much and has a plan and a purpose for her life. She admitted that she had allowed friends and other pleasures of life to distract her away from God, and from attending H.O.W classes. She was in tears as she spoke, and promised to come back to H.O.W. She returned the following week, and has been attending since.
Kirsty, 12yrs old – Kirsty and her brother are orphans, who live with their grandparents. Her Grandfather had a stroke for the third time and was in hospital when we visited. We encouraged her with scriptures and prayed with her, trusting God to touch her Grandfather in hospital. She received the encouragement and thanked us for the visit.
** Please join us to pray for Khayone (7) who has acute back injury as a result of a fall which she suffered when she was a baby. She will be going for an X-Ray soon.
** Please pray for L.J (11) – one of our faithful H.O.W kids who has been in and out of hospital recently due to constant pain, resulting from complications during his circumcision four months ago. He was hospitalised the following day, and discharged to return to School. However, after more complications and two further operations he is now using a catheter. He has been scheduled for another operation in March 2020.
